A budget of carbon cycling in the Belgian coastal zone: relative roles of zooplankton, bacterioplankton and benthos in the utilization of primary production OMA
Joiris, C.R.; Billen, G.; Lancelot, MH.; Daro, M.H.; Mommaerts, J.-P.; Bertels, A.; Bossicart, M.; Nijs, J.; Hecq, J.H..
The various biological compartments of the Belgian coastal zone of the North Sea were studied since 1971. The synthesis of available data on carbon cycling includes phytoplankton biomass and activities (particulate and dissolved primary production, respiration) , zooplankton biomass and activities (grazing, respiration) and planktonic and benthic microbial heterotrophic activities. These various carbon flux estimates allow the development of an overall budget of carbon cycling. This budget shows the importance of microbial (planktonic and benthic) heterotrophs versus zooplankton in the utilization of primary production. Comparison with literature data suggests that this could be a general feature of coastal, as opposed to open sea ecosystems.

A simplified 14C method for grazing measurements on natural planktonic populations OMA
Daro, M.H..
The method used consists of adding highly radioactive material (40 µCi/l NaH14CO3) to sea water with its natural concentrations of zoo- and phytoplankton, incubating this water in the light, separating zoo- from phytoplankton after 1h or at the most 2h and measuring the radioactivity of both. Under such conditions, the concentration of the tracer in phytoplankton can be simplified as a linear function of time, and that of the zooplankton as a parabolic function of time. This simplification leads to an overestimation of grazing of at most 2-3%. Comparisons with the Coulter Counter method are given and discussed.

Copepod composition, abundance and diversity in Makupa Creek, Mombasa, Kenya OceanDocs
Osore, M.; Fiers, F.; Daro, M.H..
The taxonomic composition, abundance and spatio-temporal distribution of copepods were analysed from monthly zooplankton samples collected in Makupa creek and Mombasa Harbour (Makupa creek was until recently subjected to considerable dumping of domestic and industrial waste). At least 51 copepod species belonging to 38 genera in the families Calanoida (25), Harpacticoida (5), Poecilostomatoida (7) and Cyclopoida (1) were identified. The most common genera were Acartia, Acrocalanus, Corycaeus, Oncaea and Oithona. Copepods bloomed in the wet months of November and April (75 to 158/m3). Abundance was consistently high near the creek mouth and low within the creek enclosure. Copepod diversity (H’) was slightly higher (2.00 to 2.57) during September, November,...

Etude des migrations nycthémérales du zooplankton dans un milieu marin peu profond OMA
Daro, M.H..
The Sluice-dock of Ostend, a shallow (1.5 m) marine biotope of 86 ha stays closed during some 6-7 months of the year and is not influenced by the tides. During 24 h cycles the nycthemeral migrations of the zooplankton at 5 depths in a watercolumn of 1 meter were studied in relation to several environmental factors: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and chlorophyll content. The photosynthesis shows a minimum during the night and shows a maximum during the late afternoon, at which time the water-temperature is also maximal. Holo- and meroplanktonic organisms migrate towards the surface around 3-5 o'clock a.m., at which time the chlorophyll content is minimal, hence our hypothesis of nocturnal grazing, this phenomenon perhaps combined with a nocturnal...

Etude du biotope de l'ostréiculture à Ostende en 1970 OMA
Daro, M.H.; Soroa Bofill, J..
Our study about the biotope of the oyster culture, the 'Bassin de Chasse d' Ostende', has shown us that: (1) the phyto- and zooplanktonic population extraordinary abundant let suppose us that the available food is enormous. (2) The harmful organisms (<i>Polydora ciliata</i>) and the competitors of food for the oyster (<i>Mytilus edulis, Balanus, Mya arenaria</i>) have fixed them by a clumsy manner on the <i>Ostrea</i>. (3) The abundance of the competitors did not restrain the growth of the mussels and the oysters. On the contrary, their growth appears to be one of the greatest of Europe.

Etude écologique d'un brise-lames de la côte belge: 2. Biologie et développement saisonnier des espèces OMA
Daro, M.H..
In a previous publication we focussed on the description and the study of the zonation of the organisms and their living conditions on a wave-breaker in Knokke. We showed that a certain number of dominant species are situated at exact levels of the wave-breaker, levels that we designated under the name of stages: 1. Algae stage2. Barnacle stage3. Mussel stage4. Tubularia stageEach of these stages is subdivided in characterised zones by particular associations of organisms. We described these organisms in the first part. We are interested in the second report to define the role of each of the partners of an association, emphasizing the biology and the ecology and the interaction between the different species.

Image analysis as a tool for measuring particulate matter concentrations and gut content, body size, and clearance rates of estuarine copepods: validation and application OMA
Billiones, R.G.; Tackx, M.L.M.; Flachier, A.T.; Zhu, L.; Daro, M.H..
The performance of image analysis in measuring suspended particulate matter concentrations was compared with that of the Coulter counter in different samples including latex spheres, diatoms and natural estuarine waters. The two techniques gave comparable numerical concentrations. Image analysis results also correlated positively with dry weight measurements of estuarine suspended particulate matter samples. The conversion of particle areas measured by image analysis into volumes was addressed by trying to determine the average height of the particles. This was done by plotting volume concentrations from the Coulter counter against area concentrations from image analysis. The resulting linear relationships were found to be significant in homogeneous...

L'association des amphipodes et des <i>Polydora ciliata</i> à la côte belge OMA
Daro, M.H..
The worm <i>Polydora ciliata</i> is colonized, at the Belgian coast, by 2 amphipods: <i>Jassa falcata</i> in the surf zone and <i>Corophium insidiosum</i> in calm waters. This difference is caused essentially by the morphological characteristics of the 2 amphipodes: <i>Jassa falcata</i> possesses a pair of very strong gnathopodes II, allowing it to hold on firmly in strong currents, while <i>Corophium insidiosum</i> lacks these characteristics.

Measuring selectivity of feeding by estuarine copepods using image analysis combined with microscopic and Coulter counting OMA
Tackx, M.L.M.; Zhu, L.; De Coster, W.; Billones, R.G.; Daro, M.H..
Although estuarine zooplankters are generally believed to be detritivorous, high clearance rates by the estuarine copepods <i>Eurytemora affinis</i> and <i>Acartia tonsa</i> on natural estuarine microplankton have been reported in the literature. In order to enable detection of possible selectivity for these microplankton organisms over detritus, a method that measures clearance rates on total particulate matter is proposed. Image analysis is used to measure copepod gut contents, and combined with Coulter counter measurements of total particulate matter concentration, allows one to calculate clearance rates on the latter. The first results indicate that, in the Westerschelde estuary (SW Netherlands), both <i>E....

Seasonal variation of phytoplankton populations and primary production in the Sluice dock at Ostend (Belgium) OMA
Mommaerts-Billiet, F.; Mommaerts, J.-P.; Daro, M.H..
The Sluice Dock at Ostend has been investigated for phytoplankton populations and primary production for the years 1971 and 1972. Nannoplankton is demonstrated to take a prominent part in pelagic primary production. The seasonal cycle shows a short spring outburst of <i>Eutreptiella marina</i> da Cunha followed by a depressed production period (May). Summer is the most productive; several nannoplankton populations appear successively in this period. The depression in May is discussed in relation to zooplankton activity.

The autecology of <i>Polydora ciliata</i> along the Belgian coast OMA
Daro, M.H.; Polk, P..
The life-history of <i>Polydora ciliata</i> has been studied in the Bassin de Chasse, Ostende. Three or even four generations succeed one another during the period from April to September. Their planktonic larvae can be found throughout the year, they have a life of 12 to 14 days. Larvae from 3 to 9 segments are growing 2 segments a day, larvae from 10 to 16 segments 1 segment a day. During the first period they feed on nannoplankton or detrital particles, during the second period they are carnivorous, but also detritiphagous and phytophagous. After 3 weeks of sedentary life egg-laying takes place. When one or two broods have been produced most animals die. The eggs hatch after 1 week. The worms are detritiphagous and scrape the food directly...

The geometric features, shape factors and fractal dimensions of suspended particulate matter in the Scheldt Estuary (Belgium) OMA
Billiones, R.G.; Tackx, M.L.; Daro, M.H..
Water samples from the Scheldt estuary were collected in three fractions: (a) unfiltered water, (b) water filtered through a 50 µm net and (c) water filtered through a 300 µm net. Particles easily recognisable from the majority of the amorphous particles were isolated and their geometric dimensions measured. From the measurements, shapefactors were calculated. Measurement of fractal dimensions was attempted. From the first fraction, the particles isolated and measured were circular and chained diatoms. In the second fraction, zooplankters were easily distinguishable and representatives of the three dominant groups (cladocerans, cyclopoids and calanoids) were measured. In the third fraction, detrital pieces from monocotyledon and dicotyledon plants were...

Winter distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton around some sandbanks of the Belgian coastal zone OMA
M'harzi, A.; Tackx, M.L.; Daro, M.H.; Kesaulia, I.; Caturao, R.; Podoor, N..
The distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton around three sandbanks (Gootebank, Westhinder and Buitenratel sandbank) off the Belgian Coast was investigated in February 1994. The abundance of phytoplankton taxa was significantly different between the sandbanks. Community analysis using TWINSPAN resulted in a clear separation of clusters corresponding to the different sandbanks. The zooplankton community analysis, on the contrary, showed a rather indistinctive division of the sandbank stations. This was due to the omnipresence of three dominant copepod species (<i>Temora longicornis, Pseudocalanus elongatus</i> and <i>Centropages hamatus</i>). When these species were excluded from the analysis, a clearer distinction between the...
